§ 01

Introduction

I am planning to launch a next-generation startup and business accelerator called Fynbos Foundry, based in George, Western Cape.

In the future, we may scale the accelerator to additional locations. The long-term goal is to become a typical "Y Combinator"-level accelerator in South Africa, built for high-quality startup creation and supported by both a local and global network of advisors and mentors for our portfolio startups.

The Ambition

A global platform — adapted to emerging-market realities.

HQ

Reach

& beyond

Model

Equity

or Less Equity + a Capped Revenue Share

§ 02

Investor Model

Fynbos Foundry does not manage a fund. It curates the room.

Instead of investing cash itself, Fynbos Foundry maintains a curated network of investors. Startups pitch this network to raise capital under standard investment terms. We would take equity in the startups upon them receiving funding.

1

Pre-acceptance

Startups are pre-accepted into Fynbos Foundry after evaluation. We help them get ready for fundraising.

2

Investor introduction

The startups pitch to our curated investor network under standard terms.

3

Full acceptance

Once capital is raised, the startup is fully accepted — and only then does Fynbos Foundry take its equity stake. Fynbos Foundry would then provide business support which may include advisory on strategy, leveraging AI tools, marketing and scaling as well as access to our advisor network.

Targeted investor network capacity
Indicative · per startup

~R2m ~R200m

We aim to curate an investor network capable of deploying approximately these amounts per startup, depending on stage. Follow-on funding by these investors may be possible for select startups. Amounts smaller than this for pre-seed and seed cheques are also supported with the minimum being R500 000 in total funding for each startup. These figures above describe the network we intend to assemble — not committed capital.

§ 03

The Portfolio

Three lanes. One thesis: back the right people, in the right businesses, with the right structure.

Selection Criteria

Your edge is you. We just scale it.

Criteria
forFounders

We look for evidence & potential, not résumés.

Agency/doer over credentialsHigh curiosity & learning speedCoachable yet independently mindedResilience, persistence & integrityHigh ambition & commercial instinctAbility to sell, recruit & persuadeResourcefulness with little capitalStrong communication & confidenceRelevant domain advantage/experience is a plus (not a requirement)Humility

A higher-education degree is preferred, but not required. What matters most is proof of exceptional entrepreneurial mindset and a track record of exceptional or entrepreneurial achievement and initiative.

Lane 01

Founder-originated startups

  • Real customer problem with a missed insight
  • Large/scalable market: SA → Africa → global
  • Exceptional idea with a convincing case or demonstrated validation, pilots, revenue or demand
  • Credible differentiation & defensibility
  • Clear capital needs & use of funds
  • Clean ownership, IP & investable structure (although a registered business entity is not required for applying and pitching to Fynbos Foundry and its network of investors —  it is only required if investment into your idea from our investor network is confirmed)
  • Strong founder-market fit
  • Sector agnostic with a focus on innovative, unique & high-growth business ideas
  • Solo founders or teams are eligible to apply

Pre-acceptance can happen early. Full Fynbos Foundry acceptance and Fynbos Foundry's equity stake happens only after an investor-network raise closes.

Lane 02

Fynbos Foundry-originated startups

  • Talented entrepreneur/team — chosen to build startup ideas given by Fynbos Foundry
  • Fast learner in unfamiliar markets
  • Can build MVP, sell, recruit & execute without constant supervision
  • Substantial upside, low competition, clear monetisation
  • Typically inexpensive early-validation potential
  • Improving Fynbos Foundry’s original idea is a big plus
  • Sector agnostic with a focus on innovative, unique & high-growth business ideas
  • Solo founders or teams are eligible to apply

Lane 03A

Traditional/no-succession businesses

  • Annual revenue: R1–3m minimum; R5–50m preferred; up to ~R100m
  • Existing revenue & customers, or clear fixability
  • Trustworthy financial records & 3+ years history
  • Recurring customers & meaningful profit-uplift potential
  • Owner-operated, no clear successor, willing to delegate
  • Business operator salary affordable; no major liabilities
  • Near-retirement/no-succession situations are prioritised
Lane 03B

E-commerce

  • Annual revenue: R250k to R10 million+ with good margins and trackable data
  • Proven products but significant potential for improvement on execution
  • Ads/CRO (conversion rate optimisation)/retention can be improved yet the business typically has existing, sufficient fulfilment capacity
  • Willingness to fund approved growth spend
  • Our deciding factor: can Fynbos Foundry plausibly create significant incremental profit within months?
